New study calls for alternative “bottom-up” index on China’s economic growth focusing on 150 large listed companies, which shows greater volatility than the official figures

China’s official statistics on growth in gross domestic product (GDP) often spark debate on whether the numbers accurately reflect such a sprawling and fast-changing economy.

To address this issue, a new study published in the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies calls for an alternative “bottom-up index” focused on revenue and gross margin at 150 large companies listed on major Chinese stock exchanges.

These more transparent measures from 19 industry sectors present a more detailed picture of China’s economy – and show that economic growth has been more “volatile” than the official figures suggest.

While numbers from China’s National Bureau of Statistics are “serious indicators” over the medium term, “our findings would caution against too much reliance on reported numbers quarter by quarter and even year by year,” says the study co-authored by Professor Peter Williamson of Cambridge Judge Business School.
