Harrington Brooks comments on Time to Talk Day and the impact of debt concerns on mental well-being PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 February 2018
Commenting on Time to Talk Day 2018 and the impact of debt concerns on mental well-being, Matthew Cheetham, CEO of Harrington Brooks, commented: “Mental health and debt are two taboo subjects that often unfortunately go hand in hand. If you're struggling with your finances you may feel anxious or depressed; if your mental health is poor then this makes it harder to manage money. Due to the stigma of the subject, people often don't disclose that they're having trouble until they're experiencing very serious financial difficulties but a lot can be done to help prevent the situation getting to this point. Tackling debt stigma could have real value in encouraging more people to come forward for help before their problems spiral out of control.

“We fully support the Time to Talk initiative and raising awareness of mental health more generally, and we are committed to helping people manage any financial difficulties they may have as well as tackle any mental health issues that can arise as a result of any debt worries. Around 500 of our customers a month are signposted to our Specialist Support Unit, a team of advisors who are specially trained to provide additional information, time and support to customers, and sensitively explore their circumstances to offer solutions that help them manage their debt issues. 30% of Harrington Brooks customers referred to our Specialist Support Unit have been identified as having Mental Health issues and received the level of support they needed.

“By staying silent or hiding the extent of any financial difficulties, people are putting immense strain on themselves and on their relationships with those around them. It’s important to make sure people know they’re not alone with their debts. There’s always someone you can speak to for advice and support, and a solution that can help.”
