FPB gives Theresa May 6 out of 10 for her Queen’s speech PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 June 2017
Theresa May’s first Queen’s speech has been given a 6 out of 10 by the Forum of Private Business.

Commenting after the speech, Managing Director of the Forum, Ian Cass, said: “Quite rightly it talked first about the economy and the importance of clear communication regarding the Brexit negotiations to ensure business confidence.

“She also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring investment and growth as well as the implementation of an Industrial Strategy.

“We hope the strategy displays an understanding of, and some measures aimed at, helping small and microbusiness, which the Forum have been active in seeking.”

Ian Cass also made reference to infrastructure projects, adding that “High Speed Rail and improved infrastructure is also to be welcomed, particularly if it links the more remote parts of the UK and helps meet the Forums hopes for a more balanced UK economy.”

However, Ian Cass urged caution, particularly in relation to workers rights and regulations.

He said: “We hope that the government gets this regulation right, as we already know the government’s own independent regulatory policy committee reviewed 318 regulation submissions in 2016, and rejected 28% of them.”

“While the Forum and its members welcome good regulation, poorly thought out or inappropriate regulation places a burden on small and micro businesses, so they need to get this right. We therefore encourage the government to consult thoroughly on these measures specifically.”
