John Hartson looks to help those struggling with gambling addiction and debt PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 27 March 2017
Former professional footballer, John Hartson, is hoping to raise awareness of the dangers of gambling and the serious impact it can have on people’s personal finances.

Acting as an ambassador alongside Creditfix, the UK’s largest personal insolvency practice, John has told his own story in an effort to encourage others struggling with a gambling problem and personal debt to come forward and ask for help.

John shared some of his own personal experiences in a video launching his role as an ambassador: “My story shows no matter what your situation is, a gambling addiction and poor financial planning can lead to serious problems with your personal finances.

“I was naïve with my spending, I was earning very good money as a footballer, but my outgoings were enormous. I gambled a lot of money - the high of winning a big bet was amazing, but in the long run it cost me thousands and thousands of pounds.

“Gambling addiction and the catastrophic effect it can have on people’s personal finances is a disease that doesn’t discriminate between rich and poor. I want to use my position and public profile to create a platform to help others that may be in a similar situation.

“Opening up, seeking help and talking about your situation, whether that be with professionals or family and friends, is the first step towards taking back control of your personal finances.”

Pearse Flynn, CEO of Creditfix, added: “We know that gambling can be a serious problem for many people, and sadly this often leads to individuals finding themselves in large amounts of debt, with a sense of there being nowhere to turn.

“John telling his own personal experiences will hopefully give people the confidence to face their problems head on and seek help and support.”
