Money Advice Trust appoints three new Ambassadors PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 June 2016
The Money Advice Trust, the charity that runs National Debtline and Business Debtline, has appointed three new Ambassadors to represent the charity in the external world, as it continues its three-year plan to help “more people, more effectively”.

Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles KCMG LVO is Group Head of Government Affairs at HSBC Holdings and Chairman of the Financial Inclusion Commission. Sir Sherard spent more than 30 years in the British Diplomatic Service, serving in Cairo, Washington and Paris, as Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary and latterly as the UK’s Ambassador to Israel, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.

Carol Sergeant CBE is on the Board of Danske Bank and has garnered a length City career that saw her working in a multitude of senior positions – including Head of Major Banks’ Supervision at the Bank of England, Managing Director of the Financial Services Authority and Chief Risk Officer at Lloyds Banking Group. She is also Chair of whistleblowing charity Public Concern at Work.

Simon Walker has been the Director General of the Institute of Directors since 2011 and has previously served as Communications Secretary to HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace, Director of Corporate Affairs at British Airways, and as a special adviser in the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit at 10 Downing Street from 1996-97.

The trio join the Trust’s President, Baroness Coussins, and existing Ambassadors Liz Barclay, Sir Ian McCartney, Sir Brian Pomeroy CBE and Martin Hall MVO MBE in helping management and the Board to achieve the charity’s strategic objectives. The appointments are on a pro-bono basis and for a renewable term of three years.

The move follows the appointment of former senior civil servant Adam Sharples as the Money Advice Trust’s new Chair of Trustees, with effect from 6th July 2016.

Joanna Elson OBE, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, said: "I am delighted that Sir Sherard, Carol and Simon will be joining our strong team of external Ambassadors. Their support is crucial in representing the Trust in the external world, as well as lending invaluable advice and expertise to the ultimate benefit of our clients.

“With consumer credit rising and many households continuing to struggle after the prolonged squeeze we have seen over the last decade, we expect demand for the free debt advice we provide through National Debtline and Business Debtline to continue increase.

“We look forward to working with Sir Sherard, Carol and Simon and the whole team to ensure that many more people in financial difficulty receive the free advice they need.”
