Adam Sharples appointed Chair of the Money Advice Trust PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 April 2016
The Money Advice Trust, the charity that runs National Debtline and Business Debtline, has appointed former senior civil servant Adam Sharples as its new Chair of Trustees.

In a career spanning 23 years in the civil service, Adam Sharples most recently served as Director General for Employment (2009-11) and Director General for Work, Welfare and Equality (2004-09) at the Department for Work and Pensions, following several senior posts at HM Treasury including Director of Public Spending (1998-2003).

Since 2011 he has served in a variety of non-executive roles across the public, private and third sectors, including as Non-executive Chairman of Ixion Group and a Governor of Anglia Ruskin University.

The appointment, which takes effect on 6th July, comes as current chair Mike Barley prepares to step down after two terms at the Trust. The Trust has recently been shortlisted for a Charity Governance Award for ‘Improving Impact’ in recognition of the achievements of its strong team of Trustees working with the staff team.

Joanna Elson OBE, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, said: "We are thrilled to announce that Adam will be lending his extensive expertise as Chair of the Money Advice Trust. Last year we helped more than 1.35 million people to tackle their debts and manage their money with confidence – and we look forward to working with Adam to build on this work to help even more people, more effectively.”

Adam Sharples, incoming chair of the Money Advice Trust, said: “The Money Advice Trust is doing wonderful work for people in financial difficulty right across the UK – and I am excited to be joining at such an exciting time in its development. With consumer credit growing significantly and many households still struggling after the prolonged squeeze on household incomes we have seen over the last decade, free debt advice services like National Debtline and Business Debtline have never been more important. I look forward to helping the charity meet this challenge."

Mike Barley, outgoing chair of the Money Advice Trust, said: “I am pleased to be leaving the Trust in such good hands – not only Adam’s, but also those of our terrific team of Trustees and the extraordinarily talented and dedicated staff both in London and in Birmingham. It has been my privilege to be a part of the Trust’s development - including improving the way it works with other charities - and I have every confidence it will continue to go from strength to strength.”

The Trust, which celebrates its 25th year in 2016, has also published its revised vision;

People across the UK tackle their debts and manage their money with confidence.

and mission statement;

Supporting people and small businesses to deal with their debts, training the free advice sector to help them, and improving the UK's money and debt environment.
