FSB welcomes First Minister’s Business Rates conference pledge PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 March 2016

Speaking to FSB conference in Glasgow this morning, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that the former chair of RBS Scotland, Ken Barclay, is to lead the Scottish Government’s review of business rates.

Mr Barclay will consider how business rates might better support business growth, respond to wider economic conditions and changing marketplaces and support long-term growth and investment.

The First Minister also highlighted her ambition to use public contracts in Scotland to boost smaller firms. In addition, she revealed her intention to deliver universal superfast broadband north of the border.

Andy Willox, the FSB’s Scottish policy convenor said: “The First Minister has obviously read the FSB’s 2016 Scottish Parliament manifesto.

“We warmly welcome her commitment to universal superfast broadband in Scotland. And, the First Minister is right to highlight that we need to redouble efforts to make public contracts easier to access for the smallest Scottish firms.

“On rates, small firms from up and down Scotland will be pleased to hear of the Scottish Government’s intentions to review the system while retaining their ground-breaking Small Business Bonus scheme. But with just over a year until the next revaluation, action may need to be taken now to make the system more user-friendly.”
