Companies urged to organised a healthy heart day PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 February 2016

National charity Heart Research UK is calling on businesses to organise their own Healthy Heart Day during February’s National Heart Month and throughout March to get their staff heart-healthy.

Companies could organise their own healthy heart day or week dedicated to the overall health of the organisation. Among the possibilities are activity challenges like a step-a-thon, sponsored static bike ride, having a healthy bake-off or setting up a healthy heart weight loss club.

Whether it is through taking part in the charity’s events, or organising their own fundraising activities, businesses will get support with whatever they decide to do, as well as knowing they’ll be helping in the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease.

The partnership with Heart Research UK will help companies in encouraging staff to live healthier lifestyles and protect their hearts through being more active and eating a healthier diet.

Heart Research UK will provide lots of event ideas for businesses to consider, from international challenges to local sponsored walks, parachute jumps to local 10k runs as well as advice on healthy food and diet.

Jodie Thomson, Corporate Development at Heart Research UK, said joining up with Heart Research UK gives staff the encouragement and impetus to get healthier. “Having healthier staff usually means a happier and more productive workforce, and wherever companies have partnered with Heart Research UK they’ve really seen a difference,” she said. “It also gives staff a fundraising purpose where they know they’ll be helping hearts near them.”

Among the companies that have teamed up with Heart Research UK have been worldwide packaging company DS Smith who have taken on the charity’s Healthy Heart Mark initiative at its sites across the UK.

DS Smith has also run two healthy heart days involving staff from its 28 UK sites, and Brian Wark, HR Director at DS Smith’s UK Packaging Division, said they were successful in getting staff involved, encouraging teamwork and thinking about their health. “Both healthy heart days engaged employees throughout the business, keeping them heart healthy and focussed whilst having fun at the same time,” he said.

“While some sites took part in cycle and walk to work initiatives, others promoted healthy eating in the site canteen and weight loss initiatives. Our relationship with Heart Research UK has not only benefitted our staff, but by raising funds, we have helped Heart Research UK promote a healthy lifestyle message at local schools as well.”
