|ABA Names New Senior Vice President for Congressional Relations|

Kirtan Mehta has been named senior vice president for congressional relations of the American Bankers Association, the trade association for the nation’s $16 trillion banking industry and its two million employees. Mehta will lead ABA’s lobbying efforts with the Senate Democratic Caucus, including Senate Leadership and Banking Committee members. His first day will be Feb. 22.
“Kirtan’s wealth of experience and proven track record will be extremely valuable as we work to educate lawmakers about banking’s most important issues,” said James Ballentine, ABA’s executive vice president of congressional relations and political affairs. “His thorough knowledge of both banking and housing make him a tremendous addition to ABA’s government relations team.”
Mehta comes to ABA after serving as legislative director and chief counsel for Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-West Va.). Before that, he served as principal banking and housing advisor to Sen. Manchin during his tenure on the Senate Banking Committee. Prior to his time on Capitol Hill, Mehta worked as an associate at Zuckerman Spaeder LLP (Washington, D.C.), where he specialized in white collar defense and commercial litigation and as an associate at Winston & Strawn LLP (Chicago, Ill.), practicing in antitrust, class action and patent litigation.
A native of Illinois, Mehta holds a juris doctor from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.
