FSB reacts to EU’s Single Market Strategy PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 October 2015
In response to the EU announcement of the Single Market Strategy, John Allan, National Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “The European Single Market is good for business. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) welcomes the European Commission’s push to make the market a more flexible and fairer place to operate. Already, one in four FSB members export, mainly to EU member states. However, small businesses have the potential for even greater cross border trade and we are encouraged by the proposals in this strategy aimed to make this easier.

“For example, the creation of a Single Digital Gateway has the potential to be a rich source of information for small businesses. Our members have reported significant barriers to trade due to a lack of available information and we hope this new digital portal will resolve some of these issues.

“Just as we work with UK Ministers to recognise the needs of all types of businesses, the FSB would like the European Commission’s push on Start-Ups to be inclusive of all small firms, and not just those that are fast-growing or technology-focused. The spotlight must be on all businesses, whatever their size or aspiration.

“The complexity of VAT rules across the 28 member states continues to be a major challenge for small businesses in the UK. The FSB will look closely at the proposed VAT Action Plan when published to ensure it is easier for small businesses to trade across the EU.

“Finally, we have long been concerned about the free movement of services being undermined by poor implementation and the enforcement of existing rules. It’s good to see a renewed focus on better implementation and enforcement within each member state. We hope this new Single Market Strategy will help to level the playing field and ensure wider access to the Single Market for our members.”
