CML News & Views: Buy-to-let - the past is no guide to the future PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 September 2015

Today’s issue of CML News & Views looks at buy-to-let lending, which, since it emerged in the 1990s, has contributed to a renaissance of the private rented sector.

But now it faces new challenges, with a greater tax burden on landlords who borrow to invest in property and uncertainty about the impact of regulatory intervention.  Implementation of the mortgage credit directive will extend regulation to some buy-to-let mortgages, and later this autumn the Treasury will launch a consultation on macro-prudential regulation of the sector.
In our main article in today’s issue of CML News & Views, we chart the rise of buy-to-let, publish new data on its geographical spread, and urge the government and regulators to consider the effects of uncertainty on the market and the potential for reforms to have cumulative, unintended and perhaps damaging consequences.  This issue also includes our September market commentary, which first appeared last Thursday.
