Fewer judgments evidence stronger economy PDF Print E-mail

The number of small claims judgments in Northern Ireland in the first half of the year reached its lowest level since 2008, according to figures released today by Registry Trust.

The total number of debt judgments in the first half of the year fell by 8 per cent to 4,364.  

Registry Trust is the non profit organisation which collects judgment information from jurisdictions across the British Isles and Ireland. In Northern Ireland it collects information on defaults and small claims judgments, and High Court judgments. Judgment records, business and consumer, are available for the public to search at . A judgment represents incontrovertible proof of unmanaged debt.

There were 78 High Court judgments in the first six months of 2015, 58 per cent down on the same period of last year, continuing the trend. The number of small claims judgments decreased by six per cent to 4,286.

The total value of half year debt judgments fell by 15 per cent year on year to £23m. The decrease was driven by a 22 per cent fall in the value of High Court judgments to £14m, continuing the trend of recent years. The total value of small claims judgments in the first half of the year remained stable.

The average value of a small claims judgment was £2,001. A High Court judgment was £181,094 on average.

Commenting on the statistics, Malcolm Hurlston CBE, chairman of Registry Trust said: "It is good to see judgments in decline. It indicates a safer climate in which businesses can borrow to grow."

During the first six months of 2015 Registry Trust received 12,037 requests to search the register for Northern Ireland, the bulk of which were made on line via . Through TrustOnline anybody in Northern Ireland is free to search for judgments and other registered information against businesses and consumers in any jurisdiction in the British Isles and Ireland. “It is a unique benefit for people to be able to check the debt record of any business or person with which they may be transacting. Negative information should at least give pause for thought.” said Mr Hurlston.
