CML News: What makes mortgage rates tick? PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 31 July 2015

At the CML we’re very careful not to discuss competitive issues such as pricing in a way that could distort competition. So we do not and cannot comment on individual mortgage product pricing.

But we have noticed that the factors and influences that underpin the setting of mortgage interest rates are not always well understood, so today we try to shed some light on these in three articles:
·        Five things you need to know about mortgage rates. <>  In this article we look at historical trends but also at what factors will influence a lender in setting rates, and how borrowers see rates.

·        Jargon buster: how do swaps work? <>  We give a blow-by-blow stylised illustrative example (emphatically not based on real life) of how an interest rate swap contract works, and why it works, for both counterparties.

·        Jargon buster: the yield curve <> in which we outline what yield curves tell us about likely future rates, and how they influence the thinking that sits behind mortgage rates.

Whether you understand rate-setting inside out, or can’t remember life before a Bank rate of 0.5%, we hope you will find them useful and interesting.
We also welcome to the CML <>  two new members and two new associates.
