Manchester business pairs with charities to host financial education day PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 July 2015

Leading Manchester-based financial services business, the One Advice Group, is today inviting local secondary school students and young job seekers to its offices to provide them with an insight into the world of work and equip them with essential personal finance skills for the future. The event is part of leading enterprise and financial education charity Young Enterprise’s Learn to Earn programme.

The One Advice Group is drawing on the expertise of the third sector to run the day, and will be supported by Young Enterprise and local charity Thrive Trafford, a partnership between Pulse Regeneration and Trafford Housing Trust, to help the young people understand the importance of effective financial management. As part of the day, the pupils will undertake sessions on the cost of living, the negative effects of indebtedness, future possible career paths, goal setting, and the importance of educational attainment.

Today’s financial education day builds on the support that the One Advice Group has given to local Young Enterprise schools and colleges to help their students learn about money management, including Haveley Hey Community School, Manchester Health Academy and Trafford College.

Matthew Cheetham, CEO of the One Advice Group, commented: "The One Advice Group works hard to reach out into the local Manchester community and provide a means for young people to learn about personal finance and debt issues. It is imperative that young people are able to learn about these important life skills, as our experience shows that people’s financial habits are entrenched at an early age, and we’re delighted to be able to help with this.

“We have listened to local Head Teachers and Principals about the need for the business community to help get students to become ‘work ready’ so we choose to hold the Learn to Earn sessions at our Group HQ at Jackson House in Sale. We have colleagues that entered the Group straight from school, some from college and some from university, so we want to show our attendees today that there is no one set way. It’s more about how they apply themselves and the commitment they show”.

Suzanne Lockwood, Young Enterprise Area Manager for the North West, said: “Our Learn to Earn programme enables students to consider their future aspirations and expectations, whilst learning about the real cost of living and possible career paths.

“Working with the One Advice Group means students can hear directly from industry experts and understand the importance of financial management.”

Mark Cottam, CSR Advisor, Community Investment, at Thrive Trafford, said: “We are really excited to be involved in this programme and seeing the benefits that the students involved will gain from it. This event is a great example of what we do at Thrive Trafford - looking to show private businesses that even the smallest actions can have an incredibly positive impact on the local community. I would encourage other businesses who are interested in learning more about working with Thrive Trafford to get in touch.”
