FSB in Scotland on new job and growth figures PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 July 2015

The number of Scots unemployed fell by 15,000 to 152,000 in the period March to May 2015 according to new figures released today. Colin Borland, the Federation of Small Businesses’ (FSB) head of external affairs in Scotland, said:

“Scotland’s encouraging job figures stand in contrast to the UK’s headline joblessness increase. Further Scottish job growth will require extra work to tap the potential of small enterprise.  What is not yet clear is how the various measures announced during the budget will impact future hiring decisions.

“Our research reveals that skills shortages are a growing concern for Scotland’s small businesses. Industry, educators and government must redouble efforts to ensure that we’re giving those going into the world of work the right skills to thrive.”

Other figures also published today revealed that the Scottish economy grew by 0.6% during the first quarter of 2015. Colin added:

“Scotland’s army of small and medium sized businesses account for 99 of every 100 firms north of the border. These businesses are a driving force behind Scotland’s economy and will have had a big part to play in today’s positive growth figures.

“However, these broad brush statistics mask the economic challenges which many Scottish communities face. Ahead of next year’s Scottish Parliament election, we’ll be putting local economics under the microscope and arguing that the time might have come for a different approach to development and growth.”
