FSB says small businesses remain ambitious despite disappointing trade stats PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 June 2015

Commenting on the trade figures for the first quarter of 2015 which show a decrease in the value of the UK’s export market, John Allan, National FSB Chairman, said:

“The continued flat export growth shows how hard it will be for the Government to hit its trillion pound export target by 2020.  However it is right that we should remain ambitious and still strive to meet these targets.

“What these latest figures show is that we need to redouble our efforts and instil an export-oriented mindset in our businesses, and especially those about to start-up in business.  We are also clear this is a long-term effort. If more businesses are to enter the export market then there needs to be a change in mindsets which will only come from continuous effort and support.  This support must be pro-active and continue to be tailored to the specific needs of start-ups and small businesses.

“Despite the disappointing overall figures there are some positive signs, such as increased trade with China where the Government’s efforts appear to be bearing fruit, and a small increase in the number of businesses exporting.

“The UK’s export strategy needs to build on increasing exports to these faster growing markets especially while the difficulties in the eurozone continue.”
