Credit Unions - cross-party support welcomed PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 May 2015

ABCUL Chief Executive Mark Lyonette has welcomed the breadth of cross-party support for credit unions as the country goes to the polls to elect a new Parliament.

Writing in his latest blog, Mark highlights ABCUL’s success in building awareness and understanding of credit unions across all the parties, and looks forward to the right kind of support for the credit union movement being a policy priority for the next Government – whatever the election result.

Specific pledges to support credit unions appear in both the Conservative and Labour manifestos for the 2015 General Election, and the Liberal Democrats, the SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party have also outlined their support for credit unions and their objectives.

These pledges of support were reiterated at the Citizens UK assembly in London on Monday, where the Conservative Cabinet Minister Sajid Javid, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg and Labour Leader Ed Miliband all highlighted their parties' support for credit unions in their speeches.

However, Mark emphasises that this support has not happened by accident, and should not be taken for granted, writing: “I remember a time only a few years ago when the most obtuse passing reference to credit unions by a backbencher in Parliament would trigger a flurry of excitement that our movement had received a rare name-check! So we mustn't be complacent or assume that support for our movement is somehow automatic or permanently ingrained.”

Thanks to the work ABCUL has done to raise the profile of credit unions with politicians, Mark concludes that: “We can be confident that whatever Parliament and the Government looks like after Thursday’s Election, our vision of thriving, growing, sustainable credit unions for all will enjoy support across the Chamber.”
