Cameron claim on two million new jobs in next five years completely lacks credibility says GMB PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 31 March 2015

“Many of the new jobs in this Parliament directly linked to the 3.2 million rise in population since 2007 which led to additional economic activity as would be expected while GDP per head is still 1.5% below 2007 levels,” says GMB.

GMB commented on Mr Cameron’s promise that the Conservatives would help create another two million jobs over the course of the next parliament if they are returned to Downing Street.

Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary, said: "Cameron’s claim completely lacks credibility.

“The circumstances that gave rise to many new jobs in this Parliament are not likely to be repeated in the next one.

"Many of those new jobs are directly linked to the 3.2 million rise in population since 2007 which led to additional economic activity as would be expected. However GDP per head is still 1.5% below 2007 levels.

“Most of these new jobs are mainly low skilled, low paid and very precarious jobs many on zero hours. Even skilled workers in the UK face being undercut while wages are stagnant or falling in real terms.

“Most workers have seen little or no evidence of any recovery in living standards due to the Tories not promoting real economic growth based on investment and productivity gains.

“Growth due to demographics should not be confused with real GDP growth per head."
