CML News & Views: A bumper issue! PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 March 2015

It’s a bumper issue of CML News & Views today, and our director general leads the way in setting out his views on the complex issue of lending into retirement . It’s getting more complicated as people enter the mortgage market later in life – and retire at different ages and with differing needs.  We want to identify the issues affecting the (safe) development of lending into retirement and ways of addressing them.  As Paul says, this work is a major project for the CML this year – and an important agenda for our times.

Meanwhile, ahead of our submission on Basel capital requirements, we warn of the potentially damaging consequences for key sections of the market, including lending  to first-time buyers, buy-to-let and funding of affordable housing.  What’s being proposed could be hugely disruptive and, we argue, needs to be reconsidered.
And at almost £75 billion, lender funding of the affordable housing sector is huge, but often overlooked.  As the parties finalise their manifesto proposals, we set out what politicians need to do to encourage future lender support.
This issue also contains today’s market commentary, and a report on speeches at our Scottish lunch earlier this month.
