After news that Amazon is struggling to verify thousands of brands and reviews on the site, Tom Clementson, Director of Consumer and SMB at Shieldpay, comments: “Online marketplaces have been flooded with fake reviews in recent years, and the findings from Which? underline the scale of the problem faced by Amazon. Moreover, fake reviews often go hand in hand with attempted fraudulent activity.
“Marketplaces primarily exist to facilitate a transaction but there should be protection in place for all users; identify verification layered with a secure payment option – like escrow. The news that TSB will refund customers who make a ban transfer is good news, for example, but the industry needs to prevent fraud rather than offer a cure after the event.”
